See who uses the Copilot seats you pay for

Track the real Copilot charges from GitHub billing, split per seat holder and per premium request user, and find seats nobody has used in a month.

Highlights

The real charges

Cost comes from GitHub's own billing report, at the net amount after included allowances. No estimates when GitHub can give the real number.

Per seat holder

Each day's seat cost is split across the people who held a seat that day. Premium requests go to the people who made them.

Idle seats, flagged

Seats nobody has used in a month show up as a recommendation, with what they cost you.

What you get from GitHub Copilot

  • Daily Copilot charges from GitHub billing, after included allowances
  • Seat cost per person, for whoever held a seat that day
  • Premium requests per user
  • Seat holders as people
  • Idle seat recommendations, for seats unused for a month

What it doesn't do yet

  • Seat holders removed before you connected. GitHub only lists current seats.
  • Copilot billed at the enterprise level. The organization report can come back empty.
  • Copilot Pro or Pro+ bought by individuals.

Paying for seats nobody opens?

Copilot is easy to roll out to everyone and hard to check on later. People change roles, try it once, or leave, and the seat keeps billing.

How it works

You give RootSpend a token from an organization owner. It reads the Copilot charges from GitHub billing and the list of seat holders. Each day's seat cost is split across the people who held a seat that day, and premium request charges go to the people who made the requests.

When a seat hasn't been used in a month, RootSpend groups it into one recommendation with the cost of keeping it.

GitHub Copilot questions

A classic personal access token from an organization owner, with manage_billing:copilot and read:org. GitHub has no read only scope for Copilot billing yet. RootSpend only reads with it and never changes your seats.

The report needs GitHub's enhanced billing platform. Without it, you can enter your price per seat, and RootSpend estimates seat cost from the seats held each day. Premium requests aren't estimated.
